About this deal

My joke is to go to management of both bands and say, 'Guys, I've spent 90 years here - more than 50 with Neil, 50 with Bruce and E Street. I felt I had to go deep and with the global war on women, and man’s deadly epidemic of lies and spin for money and power, I imagined a fierce, loving mother and wife dealing with a husband recently home from the insurrection. Another mass of voices beefs up the jumpiness of "We Better Find It," a tune with musical echoes of the 1980s. People like him, once they get in front of an audience, alone or with a band, a duo, whatever it is, you know it’s going to be brilliant.

C. for advice on their first tour, which lead to recording the ‘After The Gold Rush’ album at 18, I’ve had an eventful, topsy-turvy ride for 55 years now.He began as a classical accordionist at age five, but switched to guitar later in his youth, formed the rock band Grin, and played on Neil Young's After the Goldrush. While only 19 years old, Lofgren played guitar and piano on Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush album in 1970, which developed into a long association with him, contributing to some of Young’s more experimental albums of the late ’70s and ’80s.

But the song is a story, largely autobiographical, about someone completely in the throes of alcoholism and addiction. Although the lyrics he sings are sappy—"Queen of mercy heal us with your love/ Cleanse this wasted world"—he lets loose with the album's vocal highlight on the closer, "Angel Blues. Once Bruce said, “We’re going to hit the road in 2023,” I worked a little harder to make sure it was done by Christmas. According to a press release, “Ain’t The Truth Enough” was written in the wake of the January 6th insurrection and “reckons with the ways that misinformation and demagoguery can tear families apart and silo us in our own realities. On Mountains, Nils moves seamlessly between bluesy and straight-ahead rockers and tender ballads as only he can, all treated with his trademark attention to sonic detail, and unmistakable vocals and guitar. So I thought, “Well, what if I wrote a song from the perspective of a fierce mother whose husband just came home from the Jan. So just before the pandemic shut everything down, I took a full band out with Andy Newmark, Kevin McCormick, Cindy Mizelle, and my brother Tommy. If you’re ad-libbing 15 songs a night and even your singer doesn’t know what’s next, you just can’t get that depth. It comes to you, because we’re a well-oiled machine that’s used to hearing each other for hours and hours and hours on the road. I imagined a fierce, loving mother and wife dealing with a husband recently home from the insurrection,” added Lofgren of the track and Mizelle’s vocals.

More recently, he joined Young and his band Crazy Horse to record Colorado (2019), Barn (’21), and World Record (’22).

Nils Lofgren is the rarest of species, being an axe-man for two of the greatest backing bands in the world – Crazy Horse and the E Street Band. It must take a unique type of beast to satisfy the titanium standards that Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen obviously demand. I learned a long time ago to give myself permission to get down in whatever band I’m in, whatever role I have. I was really excited when we found out we were touring and we’d have a little choir and we’d have the horn section.
