About this deal

For example and probably unnoticed by many readers, Jack and Katharine's biographies occupy exactly the same number of lines. The RA is a unique institution, an independent charity with a mission to be a clear, strong voice for art and artists, where art is made, exhibited and debated. The perfect gift/treat for Londoners or someone visiting the city who wants to get to grips with the history hiding in plain sight all around them. When in London or other ancient cities, especially those I've visited multiple times, I constantly remind myself to look up, as well as all around as I've noticed many gems are underfoot or above my head. It is also beautifully illustrated by the brilliant Katharine Fraser and includes four self-guided maps to help you explore the city for yourself!

It has a great knack for not only giving specific examples but making you think about similar things you might find on your wanderings around this endlessly fascinating City of ours.

I will miss visiting her and being only a stone's throw away from Europe's biggest, most fast-paced and (dare I say) second-most beautiful city. I particularly like the maps for self-guided walks after each section - as an introverted traveller, I'll be using those a lot! We use Google Analytics to see what pages are most visited, and where in the world visitors are visiting from. Part of the ‘Street Furniture’ sparks insight into all the paraphernalia that makes wandering our streets so rewarding.

The illustrations are all drawings, both color and black and white, which are sprinkled throughout the text. I hate to admit it but…I requested to read and review this book knowing I would be in London and wanting to see something new, different, and fun. There are several quirky buildings and objects that would be easily missed for those not aware of what to look for. This would be an ideal coffee table book and also good to have in e-book form to guide you around the capital, particularly if following any of the suggested walking maps.Stepping Through Time’ is a “gallop through 2000 years” pulling out some key London architectural styles and features. My sincere thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion and NetGalley for the privilege of learning more about this wonderful city from a completely different perspective. So this will frustrate many potential fans of this, but being on board with the approach will make you a very much genned up and happier traveller.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group-White Lion for the ARC – This is my honest review.

See London in a completely new light inthis guide to the city's hidden secrets, untold stories andspecial places laden with history which you can discover for yourself!

Bartholomew the Great Church, overhanging jetties which remarkably survived the Great Fire, the bust of King Charles I over the entranceway of the Banqueting House, learn about sash windows and window tax, spot torch snuffers and sphinx sculptures. Whether you’ve always wondered why there are cattle troughs on your route to work, why bollards often look like upside-down cannons or wanted to know what a Victorian stink pipe is – this book will provide the tools to decipher London’s secret code and introduce you to a treasure trove of hidden spots to explore.Receiving no public funding, the RA depends on the continuing generosity of our supporters and Friends. The book comes complete with maps so you can spot these details yourselfon walks through the capital. There was not much else to do other than walk around London, so I started voraciously exploring the city and writing about my findings to a few keen subscribers.
