Themes. Important themes include using our privilege to help others, using our life to make a difference in the world, loyalty, friendship, family, love, loss, taking risks, determination, charity, privilege/poverty, survival, and fortitude. Because of strong themes, this would make an excellent book club selection. It would be particularly interesting to discuss Varinka’s options and choices. Favorite Quote: Characters. As we learn of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka, we experience life from three extremely different perspectives. The most obvious difference is that Eliza and Sofya come from privilege while Varinka is a peasant. Eliza and Sofya often use their privilege to care for others while Varinka is focused on survival. All three are strong and independent and willing to take risks to ensure their survival.

Success!

Actress L. Scott Caldwell is one of six actors playing a recurring character who who was given billing with the rest of the main cast for the only time in " The End". I was very excited to continue the story of this amazing family and learning about Caroline's mother Eliza. I was a bit disappointed Sofya wasn't a real person, but that was just me wanting to look her up and see maybe pictures or more about her life, not anything to do with the book itself Rose has had a longer time–span of recurring status before becoming a regular than any other character. Though the writing is rich and vivid with detail about the period, the storytelling is quite a bit slower than in Kelly’s captivating debut, and both the plot and relationship development feel secondary to the historical scene-setting. A nuanced tale that speaks to the strength of women.

She was later seen briefly with Hurley hanging up clothes, when Shannon asked after Walt and Michael's luggage. She commented about how terrible it must be to "lose the one person you love on the Island," implying again that her husband was not dead. (" Abandoned") Recommended. I’m highly recommending Lost Roses for fans of well-written historical fiction, for readers of Lilac Girls, and for those who appreciate stories of determined and strong women who are difference makers. If you read Lilac Girls and found parts of it difficult and disturbing, you will want to know that Lost Roses is a gentler read. It can also be read as a stand alone. In Lost Roses, we find out that Caroline Ferriday (Lilac Girls) had an activist mother that modeled compassion and helped others. Furthermore, it’s exciting that the author is working on another prequel …. a prequel to Lost Roses! I’m sure we’ll learn that women pass down these traits in families from generation to generation. I encourage you to place Lost Roses on your spring TBR! Pub Date: April 9, 2019.Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. The two met years ago one summer in Paris and became close confidantes. I loved the characters of Sofya and Luba, strong and resourceful, not giving up even when everything seemed hopeless. I don't want to spoil anything about the family but... my heart broke for them all. Incredibly well-researched (I appreciated the inclusion of Kelly's "Author's Note" and the numerous photos); and, Rose and Bernard are discovered after spending 3 years by themselves in the jungle. (" The Incident, Part 1")
