The undercurrent to the story always remains to be the suspected murder, but the reasons for this coming to happen are ever-changing and expanding with the plot whilst the background of the story continues to build. This cover combined with the Chinese-inspired A Game of Thrones comparison has me anticipating great things from this one. Lilian is a ray of sunshine and when she’s around, you just know that everything will be okay, even if it’s for a moment. But the truth of it had already sunk into the center of Hesina and broken open, flooding her with a new certainty: her father has been murdered and the need to seek justice for him sang bright in her. I love reading a unique plot, and brewing up twists and turns in my own, but what I love most i …more I'd have to say the interaction of character and plot!

Do I need to knowledge of Three Kingdoms (the classic that STRIKE THE ZITHER is based on) to read STRIKE THE ZITHER? Other characters such as Caiyan, Lilian, Sanjing and Akira (heart eyes) were also amazingly written. The promise of a kingdom in turmoil and a ban on the magic once practiced by soothsayers sounds familiar in this genre, not unlike other action-packed fantasies. I felt a bit lost at times when the girl who was effectively Empress seemed to be free to wander at will without any guards/pages/entourage ghosting her every turn, but it worked out well. in a perfect world, where I would have been able to get a 3 book contract from the get-go, I envisioned book 2 following a new character X Sanjing, and book 3 following a new character X Caiyan, all to complete the arc that's much bigger than Hesina's personal story (one of finding the truth of who killed her dad, and thereby also finding the truth of herself and dismantling the lies she grew up on).The way the story questioned this really made me think about what I would do in Hesina’s position, and I loved how the story sucked you in this way. Most of them are context-based – you can easily figure out what they refer to – but it’d still be nice to have a clear idea of what something exactly is. this book now has a place in my heart, it's been a while since I've read a book I've loved unconditionally. Still, we did see some examples of sooth-saying and what I did see was compelling (blue fire, though). It's thought-provoking, well-written, rich in details of era-appropriate attire and consistent worldbuilding.

Nosotros somos los monstruos, cuando no aceptamos el cambio, cuando nos enraizamos en opiniones basadas en actos o hechos de los cuales no tenemos conocimiento o ya nadie recuerda exactamente como pasaron.I think Descendant of the Crane really portrayed this question well and showed a lot of different paths to achieving something (some of which I cannot spoil). Deep world-building, magical family secrets, and intricate palace politics - Descendant of the Crane soars from page one. Joan has a beautiful prose that worked very well with the story, it actually exceeded my expectations.
